Is Audrey Hepburn the key to stopping the obesity epidemic?
Audrey Hepburn, iconic star of Breakfast At Tiffany’s, was renowned for her waif-like figure. But her sylph-like beauty masked a lifetime of poor health which culminated in her death at only 63.
Now, a leading scientist suggests that her genes were fundamentally altered through suffering starvation as a teenager in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands.
Dr Nessa Carey adds that this link between poor diet and genetic disruption might explain why we are now increasingly suffering from modern health crises such as obesity and diabetes.
Audrey Hepburn's enviable figure was the result of wartime deprivation. Her genes were fundamentally altered through suffering starvation as a teenager
Rates of both conditions are surging, with health scientists warning last week that half of British men will be obese by 2030.
Hepburn, the Belgian-born daughter of a Dutch baroness and an English banker, was staying in the Netherlands as a child when Hitler’s armies overran the country in 1940. She struggled to survive after her older brother was dragged off to a labour camp and her uncle and cousin were executed.
From November 1944 until May 1945, a period known in Dutch history as ‘the hunger winter’, she suffered terrible starvation. The Germans blockaded her area of the Netherlands, causing mass malnutrition that killed around 18,000 people.
Hepburn, 16, was reduced to eating tulip bulbs and trying to make bread from grass. She spent the war’s closing days hiding from the Nazis in a cellar.
Hepburn’s slight figure — her waist was only 20in — came not from any celeb-style fad diet. It was a legacy of the jaundice, anaemia, respiratory problems and chronic blood disorders she contracted in those desperate days.
After a lifetime of quietly suffering frail health, she died in 1993, two months after undergoing an operation for colon cancer.
She said of her privations: ‘After living for years under the Germans, you swore you would never complain about anything again.’
Hepburn's slight figure was a legacy of jaundice, anaemia, respiratory problems and chronic blood disorders
Now Dr Carey, a British biology expert and former senior lecturer at Imperial College, London, has written a book in which she suggests Hepburn’s poor health was the result of genetic changes caused by her terrible childhood diet.
Such changes are being revealed by the new science of epigenetics.
We are beginning to understand how we are not simply born with genes that are pre-set for life.
Vast numbers of them can be changed ‘epigenetically’ by our environments and diets. Genes can be switched on or off by this process, or the way in which they function can be altered.
Hepburn’s case is one among thousands of hunger winter victims that have been studied since the war. Their records reveal vital clues about the serious damage that bad diets can wreak. Thanks to excellent record-keeping in the Netherlands, scientists have been able to follow people there for more than five decades.
Indeed, the latest analysis of the figures, announced last week, revealed that malnutrition in childhood is linked to coronary heart disease in later life. This effect could be due to the poor nutrition of these early years permanently affecting metabolism.
The most worrying finding is that parents’ poor nutrition can seriously affect the health of their unborn children. This is particularly true of mothers who are malnourished in the first three months of pregnancy.
While the hunger winter survivors’ babies tended to be born at a normal size, they often inherited a lifetime problem: their obesity rates are much higher than normal.
Some theories suggest that when a baby suffers malnutrition in the womb, a survival mechanism kicks in that pre-sets its metabolism in preparation for being born into a world of famine and starvation. This epigenetic alteration causes the body to give priority to fat storage over a developing robust liver, heart and brain. Scientists have yet to pinpoint all of the genes that can be affected by bad diet
Recent studies of these offspring show that hunger winter babies may suffer other problems in old age, too, including a greater incidence of dementia.
Some of these effects even seem to be present in the children of this group — the grandchildren of the original hunger winter survivors. Not only were the children’s genes changed epigenetically, but those harmful changes have been passed on through two generations.
Fathers’ diets may also play a crucial role, according to studies of people living in an isolated region of northern Sweden called Overkalix.
In the early 20th century, the region suffered terrible food shortages thanks to failed harvests, interspersed with periods of great plenty, when many people would stock up and eat as much as they could.
Researchers have found that, in fathers who ate a surfeit of food in the years leading up to puberty, their sons and grandsons are at increased risk of dying from diabetic illnesses, compared to children who grew up in the same region whose fathers did not overeat during this crucial period of puberty.
Because Overkalix was so isolated, its inhabitants were genetically strongly related. So it can be shown that the unusually obese children’s metabolic problems were caused by an epigenetic change.
Scientists have yet to pinpoint all of the genes that can be affected by bad diets. But earlier this year, Cambridge University scientists found one gene that can be altered in children of mothers who had an unhealthy diet during pregnancy.
It is called Hnf4a and when altered it leaves the children with an increased risk of type-2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer later in life.
The research, funded by the British Heart Foundation, found the gene plays a crucial role in ensuring the pancreas produces sufficient levels of insulin — the hormone that controls our blood-sugar levels.
The study on human tissues shows that poor nutrition in the womb weakens the effect of Hnf4a when children grow into adulthood, increasing the risk of diabetes.
Dr Susan Ozanne, who led the study, says: ‘We are starting to understand how nutrition in the womb shapes our long-term health by influencing how the cells in our body age.’
But the research is not all doom and gloom. Scientists are also discovering how, by making small changes in our diet, we may protect ourselves and our offspring from dangerous epigenetic alternations.
For example, new laboratory studies show that expectant mothers who eat a diet rich in B vitamins — found in green leafy vegetables — may reduce the risk of their children suffering from cancers of the stomach, colon and rectum, all of which are major causes of death in the UK.
Scientists believe the B vitamins bolster the work of tumour-suppressing genes in the gut.
For most of us, it would be difficult to work out what dietary sins our mothers committed while pregnant. But we can all adopt the sort of diet that may protect us against some of the epigenetic problems we might have inherited.
There are two strong additional reasons for doing so: such a diet is in itself a very healthy regime; and might help to protect our unborn children against future problems, too.
According to findings in the journal Clinical Epigenetics, chemical components in some foods can actually switch on genes that suppress tumours while silencing those that promote their growth.
These foods include grapes, tomatoes, tofu, parsley, garlic, turmeric — and those two almost-ubiquitous health foods, broccoli and green tea.
As Dr Nessa Carey, author of the new book The Epigenetics Revolution, concludes the new studies show that following a healthy diet is more than just a matter of personal responsibility. It is our duty to future generations.
‘Maybe the old saying “we are what we eat” does not go far enough.
Maybe we are also what our parents ate and what their parents ate before them,’ she says.
What a difference four years makes: Britney Spears gets her sparkle back as she returns to scene of THAT awful MTV performance
The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards is probably an evening the Britney Spears would like to forget.
After taking to the stage in nothing more than her underwear and lacklusterly stumbling her way around while lip-synching to Gimme More, the singer's big comeback came to a grinding halt.
But last night, exactly four years after that disastrous performance, Ms Spears proved that she is better than ever - and back at the top in her crown wearing role as the true Princess of Pop.
Back on form: Britney Spears glowed at last night's MTV Video Music Awards as she walked the red carpet in a dazzling Moschino mini dress
Four years later: The singer had her sparkle back, in stark contrast to her performance at the show back in 2007 (left)
She looked happier and healthier than she has in years showing off her toned physique in a sparkling black Moschino sequin romper which she paired with platform black patent booties by Gina.
Walking the red carpet hand in hand with her former agent turned boyfriend of two years Jason Trawick, the couple kissed and cuddled and seemed very much in love.

Honoree: Britney got a kiss from Jason as she headed up to receive her award
As the singer accepted her award, after excitedly watching from the front row, she had a fun interaction with Lady Gaga, who was dressed in drag as her alter ego Jo Calderone.
When a smiling Britney took to the stage to pick up her Moonmen statue, she was put on the spot by Gaga who appeared to be attempting to kiss her.
'It was interesting, her character,' Britney told MTV News about the encounter.
'We got onstage and we felt it out.'
On form: Britney laughed her way through her unusual interaction with Lady Gaga, dressed as her alter ego Jo
Big night: Britney took home the awards for Best Pop Video and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award
Seeming genuinely excited and honored, the star graciously laughed and giggled her way through her thank-you's, like the sweet and well mannered Britney we all know and love.
She sent her love to her son's Preston and Jayden saying 'mommy loves you babies,' before thanking her management, Larry Rudolph and lastly Jason, simply telling him: 'I love you.'
Britneyhas been hard at work preparing for her upcoming world tour which begins on September 22 in Russia.
After touring round Europe for 6 weeks she then heads down to South America until Christmas.
She also currently has the number ten song on the Billboard charts with I Wanna Go from her album Femme Fatale.
Britney is well and truly back and here to stay.

1.-Remove the tacks from the belt.
2.-Start from the top and put the stacks, like this until the end.
3.-Put inside of the bra a piece of fabric that fits the fastener just for don´t prick the tacks unless you wear on a shirt.
The result has to be something like this, I already have mine. What are you waiting to create your own?
You can also create other items such as bags, shirts ... etc.
There is no better satisfaction to wear something customized from yourself, previously I wrote about the exterior fasteners. Well, so is that easy to make one, you just need a punk belt and a basic black bra or color you want, you don´t have to use tacks, you can use beads or anything else.

2.-Start from the top and put the stacks, like this until the end.

Workshy Coventry? Advert for 20 jobs in a city with more than 10,000 unemployed 'looking for work' gets just TWO repliesBosses baffled and say workers can earn £400 a week
Bosses at a Coventry security firm have been left frustrated after an advertisement for 20 new workers received only two applications.
With 10,275 local people looking for work, the hirers at OnGuard24 are baffled by the poor response.
The company, based in Coventry Point, Market Way, is looking for people to fill minimum-wage telesales posts.
But bosses are quick to point out that there are also 'good commission rates' on top of the wage, and some employees can earn £400 a week.
Lee Derrig, OnGuard24’s marketing manager, said: 'I expected the phone to be going non-stop. It’s not like we’re selling double glazing. We’re selling a product to help keep people’s homes safe from fire and burglary.
'It’s a good job with good prospects for promotion. Some of our people here are walking away with £400 a week. Yet we’ve only had two applicants.'
Qualified beauty therapist Jadean Steele, 18, of Walsgrave, was one of the two applicants.
Unemployed since 2009. she said: 'I think it’s terrible that so few people have been in touch. Lots of people are unemployed at the moment.
'I’ve been trying to get a job in a salon for months but it’s really hard. There’s not much out there. When I saw the advert I was delighted.
'It looked like a job I could do, with good incentives.'
Company director David Mawson said that the jobs would perfectly suit almost anybody in the city.
Some of the firm’s best salesmen elsewhere include a retired headmistress and a man who recently underwent a triple heart bypass.
Mr Watson, whose company sells specialist security systems, said: 'I’ve spoken to people whose lives have been saved by our system.
'We are trying to make money but we do employ people and we want to employ more. If I needed a job and I saw one where I could earn a good wage, I would pick the phone up and come here. I can’t understand why more people haven’t.'
Unemployment has now reached 7.7 per cent in the country, with more than 2.53 million Britons out of work in the three months to January - the largest number since 1994.
However, the number of people claiming out-of-work benefits fell by 10,200 between January and February to 1.44 million.
The North-South gap appears to be opening even wider, with unemployment rates hitting low-skilled workers hardest, according to job figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The data looked at the labour market since unemployment hit a 30-year low in 2005 and the results reveal a gloomy outcome for most of the country.
Areas that have seen the largest increase in unemployment are the West Midlands, with a 6.1 per cent increase since 2005, followed by Yorkshire and The Humber, with a 5.3 per cent increase.
In contrast, the lowest rises were found in the south-east (2.7 per cent), east (3 per cent) and London with 3.2 per cent. The overall increase across the UK was on average 3.3 per cent.

Trends Part I
TRENDS: PART I.
DEVIL WEARS JUMPSUIT POR NUESTRA CORRESPONSAL ane garcia
DEVIL WEARS JUMPSUIT.
Translation:And you may ask what is that of the jumpsuit, it is nothing more nor less than the classic 70's diver also called mono. I must confess that is a pledge that at first glance I find it hard to see it in my closet. But we all know that talking about trends everything is possible and we never should say never ...
The jumpsuit is a piece connecting the top and bottom, which is much more stylized female figure.

NEW YORK NEW YORK

Translation:It's amazing how fashion comes again and again, you know already what I mean? Is as if we get into a time machine and we returned to the sixties, it is not possible but I would love to relive the decade that Twiggy marked trend, where women advanced considerably in terms of dress, surrounded in a total retro vintage and where prevailed on the streets. They are still saying that fashion in the sixties was apparently seen hippy but it´s clear that the one who said he had no idea.
